Materials:
CD Player and CDs that have recorded background music without vocals. 3/4 and 4/4 time would be great to start.
Objectives:
Students will identify various rhythms and time signatures displayed on flash cards by clapping or singing the correct rhythm.
Procedures:
Using Sibelius/Finale create flash cards that display 1-2 measure rhythm patterns with varied time signatures. While playing a recorded accompaniment (select one that has a straight even beat), flash a different rhythm pattern card. The students respond by clapping the rhythm that is shown. The cards can be shuffled, repeated, skipped, and so on. Assign students to perform the patterns solo, call and response, or even allow individuals to display the cards while the class performs them. If selecting background music that has a simple chord progression (ex. I- IV- V- I) the students can sing the rhythm using a syllable.
Evaluation:
Are students clapping/singing the correct rhythm? Is the group performing the patterns together?
Follow Up:
Have students create/bring their own music to back up the patterns, Have students create their own rhythm flash cards, mix them up and practice them.
