Lesson Title: The Book that Saved the Band - Lesson 7
Synopsis: Students will learn what intellectual property and copyright are and the procedures to protect their creation.

Objectives:
- The student group members (the band) will learn that their creation is intellectual property and can be protected under US Copyright law
- Define the difference between public domain, fair use, and copyright
- Define the difference between legal and illegal uses of copyrighted material
- How to formally register works (literary work, visual art, and sound recording) with the United States Copyright Law
Intended Grade Level:
Middle School
Prior Knowledge & Skills:
- Completion of all or most of the prior lessons – 1 through 7.
- This lesson could be introduced prior to any lesson.
Equipment:
- Internet connection
- Printer
Duration:
One or two class 45 minute class periods.
Materials:

Procedure:
- Complete some or all of the procedures in Lesson 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 [add a direct link to each lesson]
- The student group members (the band) will learn that their creation can be protected under US Copyright law
- Reference online lesson:
- Students will review the US Government Copyright website for definitions and procedures about Copyright and Public Domain.
- Students will learn the legal ramifications of copyright
- The band will take one of the following steps:
- Add a copyright notice to all project parts (booklet, poems, original music, podcasts, photography, multimedia presentation, and so forth)
- Apply to the US Government using forms found at:
Note: The project can be stopped at this point or students can continue the project lessons.
Evaluation:

- Complete quiz: What is copyright?
- Proper copyright notice placed on all appropriate “works.”
