Lesson 1

Lesson Title:  Podcasting Pi - Lesson 1

Synopsis: This lesson is a 5-day process in which students will be creating scripts and creating podcasts about the number pi. Lesson 2 will have students create music based on pi that will serve as the musical accompaniment to the podcast.

Interdisciplinary Pairing Mathematics & Music

 

Objective

  • Students will create podcasts that demonstrate their understanding of pi, including:
    • The history of pi
    • The first 10 digits
    • How it is used in math

 

Prior Knowledge & Skills: 

  • The history of pi, where it comes from

Equipment

  • Computer lab with sequencing or digital audio software with recording capabilities
    • GarageBand, Acid Music Studio, or Audacity
  • Internet access
  • Suggested:  internal or external microphone; USB keyboard controller

 

Duration: 

This lesson takes place over 3 – 5 45-minute class periods.

Materials:

Procedure:

Day 1:

  • Review LESSON #1 PROJECT REQUIREMENTS with students
  • Break students into groups of 2 – 4, depending on availability of computers
  • Play example podcast for students - discuss and critique
  • Students will research the number pi using the websites given

 Day 2:

  • Create ONLY script, planning for the music element that will be incorporated (next lesson)
  • Give ample time for script writing

Day 3:

  • Distribute HANDOUT on how to create podcast and review
  • Students will record their scripts using GarageBand 3.0 or Audacity.

 Evaluation:

  • SCORING RUBRIC - LESSON 1
    • Scoring final project
    • Compile and air during pi day celebration (March 14th)
    • Put on school website - math department

Lesson Extension:
          

  • After completion of Lesson 1, students can create their own music based on the number pi in Lesson 2.
