Lesson 2
Lesson Title: Podcasting Pi - Lesson 2
Synopsis: This lesson is a continuation of Lesson 1 - Podcasting Pi. In this lesson, students will create short musical compositions based on the number pi for use in their podcasts about pi.

Interdisciplinary Pairing: Mathematics & Music
Objectives:
- Students will create background song for podcast relating to pi
- Students will create melodies based on scale
- Students may create lyrics to song
- Students will use pi to create melody (align digits with scale)
Prior Knowledge & Skills:
- The history of pi, where it comes from
- Successful completion of Lesson 1.
Equipment:
- Computer lab with sequencing or digital audio software with recording capabilities
- GarageBand, Acid Music Studio, or Audacity
- Internet access
- Suggested: internal or extrenal microphone; USB keyboard controller
Duration:
This lesson takes place over 2 - 3 45-minute class periods.
Materials:
- Student Example of song (Pi Podcast)
- Example Podcast – KidCast, epidsode 31
- LESSON 2 MAKING MUSIC WITH PI HANDOUT
Procedure:
Day 1:
- Distribute MAKING MUSIC WITH PI HANDOUT and discuss
- Teacher plays student example song
- Discuss with students that there are several ways to write song:
- numbers used as lyrics
- polysyllabic words based on digits
- lyrics about pi
- convert numbers to musical notes or chords
- Students will get into the groups that they were in for Lesson 1
- Students will discuss & plan how they will utilize pi to write their song
Day 2:
- Review with students how to use GaragBand 3.0 or Audacity.
- Students begin composing their pi songs.
Day 3:
- Finish writing & recording songs
- Students will incorporate their songs into their pi podcasts from Lesson 1.
- Teacher will compile all student podcasts into one podcast and post on school website, www.podomatic.com, or iTunes.
Evaluation:
- SCORING RUBRIC - LESSON 1 & 2
- Scoring final project
- Compile and air during pi day celebration (March 14th)
- Put on school website - math department
Lesson Extension:
- Students could create songs about pi without utilizing the numerical value of pi in their song. This will encourage the students to use their own creativity in terms of composing without limitations.
