Lesson 4
Lesson Title: The Magic of Fibonacci
Synopsis: This lesson is part of a two-part lesson (Lesson 5 -The Music of Fibonacci) where students will create PowerPoint or Keynote presentations about the Fibonacci Sequence (also known as phi and The Golden Section). The next lesson has students create musical compositions based on the Fibonacci Sequence - similar to Lesson 2 - Podcasting Pi.
Authors: J. Frankel & K. O’Malley
Interdisciplinary Pairing: Mathematics & Music
Objectives:
- Students will create PowerPoint or Keynote presentations on how the Fibonacci Sequence can be found in the world around us. Topics may include:
-
- Music
- Nature
- Architecture
Prior Knowledge & Skills:
- The students should already be familiar with the Fibonacci Sequence and how it is derived.
Equipment:
- Computer lab with multimedia presentation software such as PowerPoint or Keynote.
- Internet access
Duration:
This lesson takes place over 2 - 3 45-minute class periods.
Materials:

- LESSON #4 ASSIGNMENT HANDOUT
Procedure:
Day 1:
- Anticipatory Set: Teacher write the Fibonacci Sequence on board; ask the students to find the pattern
- Teacher shows the FIBONACCI WEBQUEST to the students - discuss.
- Teacher distributes LESSON #4 PROJECT ASSIGNMENT
- Students use the weblinks listed to explore how the Fibonacci Sequence occurs in the world around us.
- Students browse and select topic on which to report
Day 2:
- Students research their topic on web, collecting pertinent information
- Students create PowerPoint or Keynote (2 – 3 slides) illustrating the Fibonacci sequence in their chosen area
Day 3:
- Student present their PowerPoint or Keynote presentations - discuss
Evaluation:
- SCORING RUBRIC - LESSON 4
- Scoring final project
- Put finished presentation on the school website - math department
Lesson Extension:
- This lesson is followed by Lesson 5 - The Music of Fibonacci that has students create music based on the Fibonacci Sequence.
