TI:ME 2017 Composition Contest Announced

    Official Rules and Entry Form

    TI:ME is proud to encourage music creativity and creation in the classroom by promoting an annual composition contest. Students in grades K-12 along with those in college are invited to submit projects created using various types of technology to express themselves. Through generous corporate sponsorships and outstanding volunteer support, we are able to offer this opportunity to students nationwide at no cost – so be liberal with your submissions and let us hear your best! The deadline for entries is April 30, 2017 and late submissions will not be considered.

    Contest Details:

    The contest is open to students in ages K-12, and to those in college. Submissions will be judged by category, by grade group. Groups are defined as follows:

    • 3-6
      • 7-8
      • 9-12
      • undergraduate college
      • graduate college

    Each entry needs to be categorized under one of the following:

    Original Composition - DAW
    Original compositions for an electronic instrument (or computer) or any combination of electronic instruments and/or other instrument(s)/voices. Compositions should prominently illustrate creative use of technology. Projects incorporating use of prerecorded loops will not be considered in this category, and all projects must be created using a digital audio workstation (DAW). All compositions, including those intended for live performance, should be rendered or synthesized in some digital manner (MP3, CD, laptop) as there will be no space provided for live performance. Please provide a brief (150-200 words) description of the process used to complete the work, including the digital audio workstation used to create the piece.

    Original Composition - Notation
    Original compositions for an electronic instrument (or computer) or any combination of electronic instruments and/or other instrument(s)/voices. Compositions should prominently illustrate creative use of technology. Projects incorporating use of prerecorded loops will not be considered in this category, and all projects must be created using your choice of notation software. All compositions, including those intended for live performance, should be rendered or synthesized in some digital manner (MP3, CD, laptop) as there will be no space provided for live performance. Please provide a brief (150-200 words) description of the process used to complete the work, including the choice of notation software used to create the piece.

    Covers, Remixes & Loop-Based Projects
    Arrangements/recordings of pre-existing songs, song samples and projects incorporating a combination of original material and prerecorded loops. Projects should demonstrate originality in musical choices and creative use of technology. All projects should be rendered or synthesized in some digital manner (MP3, CD, laptop) as there will be no space provided for live performance. Please provide a brief (150-200 words) description of the process used to complete the work.

    Multimedia
    Works demonstrating the convergence of music with more than one discipline, which may include art/photography, video, broadcast journalism, digital storytelling and so on. Works need not be original compositions, but should reflect creative use of technology. Please provide a brief (150-200 words) description of the process used to complete the work.

    Applied Technology
    Distinctive projects that utilize technology for a specific purpose. Works may include the creation of new electronic musical instruments, interactive music systems, software projects to aid in composition, performance, and music instruction, and more. Projects should be self-contained for a simple demonstration. Please provide a brief (150-200 words) description of the process used to complete the work.

    There are no fees for entering the composition contest. In order to enter, however, students must either 1.) list a teacher who is a current TI:ME member, or 2.) may join TI:ME as a student member.

    The contests are judged by TI:ME officers and/or leadership. All decisions by TI:ME are final.

    Judges will select a winner for each category and age group, as well as one overall winner. Additional recognition may be given where appropriate.

    Judges will use the following criteria to evaluate composition submissions, ranking each project from 1 to 5 in each of the following areas (5 is best).

    ____ Originality and creativity
    ____ Creative use of technology
    ____ Melodic development is musical and expressive as appropriate for the style of the piece
    ____ Rhythms are interesting and varied as appropriate for the style of the piece
    ____ Harmonies enhance the musical impact of the piece
    ____ Formal development and variety are evident
    ____ Stylistic consistency and interest are evident
    ____ Overall musical impact
    ____ Project as a whole

    By submitting entries, participants are certifying that they own the copyrights to all materials, or have secured any necessary permissions. Participants also agree to allow TI:ME or its sponsors to post, share and celebrate the work during and after the contest. If any entry is received and the project has not been configured properly in the sharing settings for our judges to hear/view their entry, it will be disqualified. Winners will be notified via email and announced on the TI:ME website. Rules and requirements are subject to change and will be posted on the TI:ME website.

    SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS:

    • Go to drive.google.com. Log into your account if necessary.
    • Drag your project file into your drive. Your file must be playable in a browser.  High quality mp3s are preferred for audio (128 bit or greater).
    • Right click on the file and choose "Get Sharable Link.” Link-sharing must be turned on and anyone with the link must be able to view the file.  Files without proper permissions will be disqualified.
    • Copy and paste the link into a different browser to test it. If it works, submit that link to TI:ME.
