The Technology Institute for Music Educators (TI:ME) is pleased to announce the nomination and subsequent selection of Catherine Dwinal, by a unanimous vote of the previous award winners, to be the recipient of our 2014 Mike Kovins TI:ME Teacher of the Year Award.
Ms. Dwinal was nominated by previous Teacher of the Year recipient and former TI:ME president, Amy Burns. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding dedication and enthusiasm in music educators who have introduced technology into their music classrooms as a means to teach the standards of their music education program. It is named in honor of the late Mike Kovins (former president of KORG), who was instrumental in starting TI:ME in 1995.
Catie Dwinal has been teaching elementary general music at two different schools in Laconia New Hampshire since 2010. Switching schools every quarter, she teaches over 30 general music classes, a brand new iBand, and 2 different after-school chorus programs. She also serves on her district technology committee and assists many of her coworkers with day-to-day technology issues and questions. Along with her Bachelors in Music Education from Plymouth State University in New Hampshire, she has several years of experience in technology support and classroom technology services thanks to her position as a student consultant at her college's help desk.
She uses her technology skills in and out of the classroom. Still in her rookie teacher years, she is a regular presenter on elementary music technology and has presented at several conferences since 2012. Catie also serves on the Quaver Music Teacher Advisory Council and often writes posts for the company’s blog. Serving on the TI:ME Marketing Committee as well, her articles about featured commercial members can be found regularly on the TI:ME website.
Catie is the director of the Music Ed Motivation social media PD Day (www.musedmot.webs.com), put together in 2012 and still occurring every June. She was also proudly featured this year in NAfME’s October issue of Teaching Music Magazine for her work with TI:ME commercial members Quaver Music and integrating technology into her classroom. Her blog www.celticnovelist.com is always kept close to her heart, where she blogs every Friday about her thoughts, tech help, and classroom adventures.
The award will be presented to Ms. Dwinal during the keynote presentation on Thursday, Feb 13th at 1pm at the TI:ME National Conference held in conjunction with the Texas Music Educators Association conference in San Antonio, TX.
