2A Advanced Sequencing, GSUM 607

Required Textbook TI:ME 2A Advanced Sequencing Workbook, available through the bookstore.
Instructor: Lynn Emberg Purse, associate professor of music technology, was instrumental in creating the music technology program in the Mary Pappert School of Music and currently teaches sound design, electronic performance techniques, composition and multimedia/web design. She is an active composer, performer and recording artist, who specializes in electronic keyboards, wind controller and voice. Purse has performed and recorded with David Borden's New Mother Mallard, one of the world's first synthesizer ensembles, and appeared in concerts in New York at Lincoln Center and Town Hall, as well as at London 's Barbican Center and the Tivoli Concert Hall in Copenhagen . Her music is published through Ogilvy Music and the Carden Keyboard Method Series, and her keyboard ensemble compositions are performed regularly in concert programs throughout the country. Purse is a member of the TI:ME Board of Advisors and co-authored the curriculum for the TI:ME Level II courses Electronic Instruments and Preparing Digital Media. She is currently preparing user-interactive compositions for her Web site (www.lynnpurse.com) and exploring advanced composition techniques in Photoshop for a multimedia presentation of her electronic compositions.
Additional Information: Music Sequencing is a valuable tool for the creation and performance of music and supports the development of composition, improvisation, and arranging skills. The emphasis of the course will be on developing projects that are musically expressive and technically sophisticated using a variety of MIDI sequencing software packages. Techniques covered in the class include recording and editing MIDI and Digital Audio tracks, audio and MIDI looping, the selection and use of hardware and software synthesizers, the creation of soundtracks for video, and mixing and bouncing projects to a final audio CD. This course fulfills one-third of TI:ME Level II Certification requirements.

2B Digital Audio Recording Fundamentals, GSUM 606

Prerequisites: TI:ME Level I Certification or equivalent experience.
Instructor: William Purse, chair of music technology, was instrumental in developing the Mary Pappert School of Music's major in music technology as well the new masters in music technology degree. Purse's highly acclaimed series for Coda Music's Finale family, The Finale Primer, The PrintMusic Primer, and The NotePad Primer, published by Backbeat Books, are considered standard texts for classroom or individual desktop notation instruction. In addition, he wrote Home Recording Basics and several other books for the Warner Bros., Ultimate Beginner Tech Start Series and co-wrote the definitive Guitar Expressions with Aaron Stang for the new Warner Expressions Series. Purse has toured worldwide with the synthesizer ensemble Aergo and is producer, arranger, musical director and guitarist for the Duquesne faculty guitar ensemble Catch 22. He has produced numerous critically acclaimed CDs, including pianist Barbara Nissman's Rachmaninoff by Nissman, Volumes I and II, Grammy nominated for engineer (Pierian Recording Society), bass baritone Guenco Guechev's Moussorgsky - Songs and Dances of Death/Shostakovich - Suite on Verses of Michelangelo, Op. 145 (Gega New/Bulgaria-Sony International) and On Fire by Amanda Ford, Grammy nominated for producer (Alanna Records). He also produced several tracks on guitarist Ken Karsh's Ventana (Alanna Records). In addition, he has released several albums of original music, including Counting By Eight (Ridgewood Studios), Sly on Life and Free with Aergo (Pursestring Productions) and Reappearance with Catch 22.
Additional Information: This course provides a hands-on approach to the fundamentals of working with digital audio workstations. It covers techniques for recording, sampling, editing and storing sound and will include an overview of basic digital recording and sampling as well as the processes involved in creating a CD from start to completion. Audio and video synchronization projects will be developed throughout the course, including soundtrack development, sound design and voice-over for video. Sounds will also be converted to compressed formats such as MP3 for use on the Internet. In-service teachers who complete this course will create several recordings in the digital realms at the Mary Pappert School of Music's state-of-the art digital studios. Software used in the class (ProTools, Peak, iTunes and GarageBand, and Mach Five sampling software). Evaluation will be based on written homework, completion of class projects and the submission of a final project that demonstrates the techniques learned in class. Class size is limited to16 students.
This course meets one-third of the coursework requirements for TI:ME Level II Certification.
