Prior Knowledge and Skills:

Students can sing and follow 2-part choral literature.

MENC Standards Addressed:

MENC 1: Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
MENC 5: Reading and notating music.

Materials:

Copies of “Johnny Has Gone For A Soldier” arranged for 2 voices.
Electronic keyboard with teacher created practice part using a sequencer.

Objectives:

Students will sing their part in the 2-part arrangement of “Johnny Has Gone For A Soldier”.
Students assigned to part 1 will sing along with the sequenced part 2 and vice versa.

Procedures:

1.In previous rehearsals, students have already been
introduced to the part they will sing in “Johnny Has Gone
For A Soldier”.
2.With teacher conducting, each part is reviewed.
3.Teacher plays the sequenced song on the electronic
keyboard for students to hear.
4.First listening has both parts.
5.Second and third listening has isolated parts.
6.Teacher conducts the singers practicing their part along
with the part on the sequencer.
7.Teacher conducts the singers practicing their part along with the other part on the sequencer.

Evaluation:

Students will be assessed on Standard #1 and their ability to sing along with others; for the purpose of this lesson, being able to sing one part along with another part.

Follow Up:

Teacher could make practice tapes/CDs for student use at home.
