Music Technology Lab including midi keyboards connected to computers.

Objectives:

Purpose (s) or Learning Goals:

1. Students will understand the relationship between music and art.
2. Students will learn to express a feeling or mood through music.
3. Students will be comfortable in the use of GarageBand.
4. Students will be comfortable in the use of PowerPoint.
5. Students will be comfortable in the use of iTunes.

Cognitive Skills and Performance Tasks: Correlation to Standards

• Content Skill (s) Composition, performing, listening, analyzing, and understanding music
• Technology Skill (s): Use of technology tools such as computer and midi keyboard as well as GarageBand, PowerPoint, and iTunes.
• Information Literacy Skill (s): Standard 5: The student who is an independent learner is information literate and appreciates literature and other creative expressions of information.

Standard 3: The student who is information literate uses information accurately and creatively. Learning Task: Describe the learning tasks(s) Products: Students will compose a short piece on GarageBand expressing musically the feeling a picture conveys. Students will listen to the different examples and compare how music can change the feeling or mood of each picture.

Procedures:

Topic: Composing music to enhance photographs related to Music Technology

Plan description: Various pictures of famous artwork will be available in a file on the studentsâ desktops from which students may select. Students will select a picture. They will then compose a short piece on GarageBand to express the feeling the picture conveys to them. This will be pulled together in a PowerPoint presentation.

Final Project 7th Grade Music Technology

1. Create a folder to hold your final project. Do this by clicking “File” and from the drop-down menu, select “New Folder.”
2. Type your name(s) in followed by “FP.”
3. From file of artwork labeled “3rd 9 Weeks Art for Music Tech” on your desktop, select the work of art you want to compose a piece on GarageBand to enhance. This 9 Weeks we are focusing on the works of Paul Cezanne.
4. Using at least four tracks and using the rubric as a guide, compose a song to go with the work of art. Your song should be at least 24 measures in length.
5. Give it your name/artwork name Export it to iTunes and add it to your album.
6. At this point, check and write down how long your piece is. This will be useful later. (Listed under “Time” in iTunes.)
7. After you have added your song to your album, drag it to the desktop, and then put it in your final project folder. You will notice that it is no longer a GarageBand file, but now is an .aif file.
8. Launch PowerPoint. Make sure Powerpoint presentation is highlighted, then click “OK.”
9. Click “Title Slide”
10. In the top line, type ” Music Technology Project”
11. In the bottom line, type your full name.
12. At this point, you may go to slide design to customize the design and color of your slide.
13. Go to Slide Show- Slide Transition and select an appropriate transition. Apply only to current slide. Choose transition automatically between 5 and 8 seconds. (No more than 8 seconds and no less than 5.)
14. Click on “Insert” “New slide.” On the second slide, type the name of the work of art in the top field. In the bottom field, type the name of the artist.
15. At this point, you may go to slide design to customize the design and color of your slide. Go to Slide Show- Slide Transition and select an appropriate transition. Apply only to current slide. Choose transition automatically between 5 and 8 seconds. (No more than 8 seconds and no less than 5.)
16. Click on “Insert” and “New Slide.”
17. Select the slide with the large picture.
18. Double click on “Add picture.”
19. Enable All files
20. Click desktop
21. Select your picture, click on it and click “insert.”
22. Go to the toolbar and click “Insert.”
23. Choose “Movies and sounds” > “Sound from File” > Click “Music” on left Click “iTunes,” “iTunes music,” click on your song. Click “insert.”
24. Set the timing of your slide transition to match the length of your song. For example if your song is 35 seconds in length, set the slide transition to 35 seconds.
25. Click on “Slide Show,” then “View Show.” Check to see that it is automatically going from one slide to the next, and that the music is coming on automatically on the last slide.
26. Make any adjustments you feel are necessary.
27. “File > Save As” Give it your name followed by “fp” (final project) For example: Barb Miedema fp
28. Save it to the desktop and call me over right away to check it.

Evaluation:

Students will be assessed through the use of a rubric that will be presented to them at the beginning of the project.

Guidelines and expectations for formal and informal assessment.
Informal assessment: Students will be observed daily to determine if they are completing assigned work.

Formal assessment: With the use of a rubric, students will be assessed on the appropriateness and completeness of their compositions.

Products and Presentations

• Nature of products and presentations: PowerPoint presentation with music file
• Guidelines and criteria for sharing student work: Students will share work with teacher and class through imaging to a projector.
• Describe the celebration opportunity: Excellent student creations will be presented on Falcon News Network during the morning announcements.
