Materials: Yamaha PRS-195 Portable Keyboard, iMac desktop computer, Finale Music Notation Software.

Duration:

30 Minutes

Prior Knowledge and Skills:

Students must be able to assemble instrument and produce first note. (first space E from lesson book for beginning clarinet)

Materials:

Yamah Advantage Band Method Book one, amplifier, and student instruments(clarinets).

Objectives:

Each small group will perform alternating whole note and whole rests on first space E.

Procedures:

1. Ask students to assemble clarinets and have each demonstrate proper posture, hand position, and embouchure placement before playing first line E.
2. Ask students to place instruments on laps as teacher plays metronome at Quarternote=60 on the keyboard.
3. Ask students to tap along and count to four repeatedly with the keyboard metronome.
4. Have pre-made blank eight bar exercise displayed on computer. Ask for a volunteer to hold down the E key every other time the class counts to four in the repeating cycle.
5. Ask students to describe what happened on the staff when the volunteer pushed the key down for four counts, and what happed when the volunteer didnt push the key down for four counts.
6. Explain whole notes and whole rests, and E on the first line of the staff.
7. Attempt to have class play E with the metronome for four counts together.
8. Attach (form the line out/headphone jack) computer to amp, and have students play along with the eight bar exercise

Evaluation:

Students will perform the exercise, both with finale and without, without the aid of the instructor.

Follow Up:

Future lessons to expand notes, and rhythms. (Correlate with method book)
