Prior Knowledge and Skills:
Students have completed one year of instrumental lessons. Most can play one octave of B flat major concert.
MENC Standards Addressed:
MENC 3: Improvising melodies, harmonies, and accompaniments.
MENC 6: Listening to, analyzing and describing music.
Materials:
CD player and a recording of “Boogie Blues” found in the “First Concert” band book by Bruce Pearson, Neil A Kkos Music Company
Objectives:
My students should be able to recognize the sound of a “blues type” of music and begin to “feel” the 12 bar blues progression.
Procedures:
I will explain the blues style of jazz and play the CD of “Boogie Blues”. Next I will explain the 12 bar blues progression using I, IV, V chords. This will involve explaining the make up of the basic triad chord. They will next begin working on the arrangement of “Boogie Blues”.
Evaluation:
Evaluate their knowledge or grasp of triad and the concept of progression by responding on a work sheet at next lesson.
Follow Up:
Explain the concept of improvisation. Have students memorize melody of “Boogie Blues” in preporation of changing this melody (improvisation).
