Prior Knowledge and Skills:

Students able to read the names of the notes on the treble and/orbass clefs using rhythm durations of eighths, quarters, half, dotted-half and whole notes. Students able to sing various tonic, dominant and sub-domiant patterns from previous ear training using the Gordon “Music Learning Theory” method.

Teacher generated note/rhythm exercise using Sibelius Software Apple computer LCD Video Data Projector


Students able to visually anaylize a musical passage and orally identify the note names, rhythm syllables, key signature, pitch syllables. Students will also be able to incorporate this knowledge as they anaylize and perform the correct pitch and rhythm sequences.


Teacher places prior rhythm/itch pattern of 2-4 measures on the video screen. 1. Students (S) perform rhythm using Gordon rhythm syllables 2. S say note name without rhythm (out of rhythm) 3. S say note names with the rhythm (in rhythm) 4. S identify the key of the musically example 5. S say the pitch syllables out of rhythm 6. S say the pitch syllables in rhythm 7. Given the pitch “do”, S sing the pitches out of rhythm 8. S sing the pitches in rhythm 9. S can then sing the exercise in a variety of ways i.e. note names, neutral syllables.

Follow Up:

Increasingly more difficult pitch/rhythmic patterns in various keys, tonalities and rhythms.
