Prior Knowledge and Skills:

Students should have basic knowledge of inputing notes into Sibelius
Students should have knowledge of how to create and manipulate measures

MENC Standards Addressed:

MENC 2: Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
MENC 4: Composing and Arranging Music within specified guidelines.
MENC 5: Reading and notating music.
MENC 6: Listening to, analyzing and describing music.

Materials:

Any song that is played using AABA form, ex. Satin Doll, Don’t Get Around Much Anymore
Computer screen displayed on large monitor

Objectives:

Students will be able to hear and recognize AABA form.
Students will be able to compose sixteen measures of music in AABA form, 4 measures for each section, using Sibelius

Procedures:

Teacher reviews and discusses AABA form by playing examples
Teacher reviews setting up score in Sibelius for one instrument, 16 measures
Review composing techniques and procedures, ex. copy and paste
Students spend time composing 4 measures of A section so it is a melody and not just a bunch of notes
Students copy A section in next 4 measures
Students compose B section
Students copy A section for final 4 measures

Evaluation:

Teacher will be monitoring students as they work, helping them create a melody
Students will be able to save their compositions and play them for the class over the sound system.
Completion grade will be given for basic outline of AABA form.

Follow Up:

Arrange this composition for more than one instrument.
Compose using different forms, ex. ABBA, ABACAD, ABCDE
