Prior Knowledge and Skills:

Students have a basic knowledge of the step entry method in Finale Notepad. This is the third in a series of lessons where students have previously chosen a short poem and written a rhythm to match the natural feel of the words of their poem.

NAfME standard of 1994: Composing and Arranging Music within specified guidelines.
NAfME standard of 1994: Reading and notating music.

NAfME 2014: Creating 

Materials:

Projection system for demonstration, student copies of their rhythms and poems.

Objectives:

The students will learn how to step enter notes in Finale Notepad. They will also learn to enter lyrics. They will discover methods of choosing pitches to create pleasing melodic contour.

Procedures:

1. The teacher will review how to step enter notes. (10 Minutes)
2. Students will be instructed to enter their rhythmic values on pitches of their choice within the following parameters:

They may only use the notes in one octave of the F pentatonic scale. (FGACD)

They must start and end their piece on the tonic note. (F)

They may use steps and skips but no leaps.

3.The students will listen to their pieces and edit for melodic contour. (20-30 Minutes)

Evaluation:

The teacher will circulate and offer suggestions during the independent part of the lesson. Students will save their pieces for further evaluation with regard to technology, following the parameters, and artistic qualities.

Follow Up:

Students may need more than one 40 minute period to edit their pieces and complete this assignment. They will subsequently learn to enter their lyrics and publish their pieces for other students to play and sing.
