This is a beginner band lesson – students will have a general music background, from K-3

MENC 5: Reading and notating music.

Objectives:
Objective:
1. Recognize 16th notes, 8th notes, quarter notes, half notes, dotted half notes and whole notes.
2. Count the rhythm using the appropriate numbers
Procedures:
Group of 5 students for instrumental music lesson
10-15 minutes on this activity
-using the worksheet, starting with line 1, Teacher will demonstrate how the 16th notes sound, and are counted
-students will echo clap/count the rhythm
-rhythm will be “played” with hands & voice
-students will be asked to find another word that also has 4 sounds/syllables, like a 16th note (for example: wa-ter-mel-on)
-this sequence will be repeated with 8th notes and 8th note rests (lines 2 and 3 of the worksheet)
Evaluation:
Teacher observation will evaluate who is participating and understanding the concept

at the folowing lesson, we will continue with the quarter notes and half notes…
