Prior Knowledge and Skills:

Students have knowledge of rhythms from whole notes to at least eighth notes. Students also have learned the names of the notes on the lines and spaces of the staff (treble clef only).

Materials:

Crazy Composing handout, Boomwhackers

Objectives:

Students will be able to compose an original melody in the key of F major (treble clef). Students will listen to their completed compositions and students will be able to perform in small groups on the Boomwhackers.

Procedures:

Hand out Crazy Composing handout and read through instuctions with students. Have students begin composing their music by using the simple entry tool in Finale. StanleyP2005-06-30
Once students complete their compositions have them audition their work through the playback controls in the program.

Have students finish their compositions by the end of the period (40-45min). Have students break into small groups and practice their compostions on the Boomwhackers. Students will then perform their compositions in small ensembles for the class.

Evaluation:

Completed compositions will be evaluated on accuracy and students ability to accomplish the assignment within the guidelines provided.

Follow Up:

Students could possibly create a percussion accompaniment with the rhythm section generator in the plug-in menu in Finale. They would be able to listen to their composition with percussion. If you do not have the full version of Finale, have students improvise percussion parts with the melodies created by the students.
