Students will practice reciting the poem in rap style. Students will select a drum rhythm pattern that fits their poem. Students will practice reciting the poem in rap style with the selected drum pattern. Students will evaluate the drum pattern with the poem and possibly select a different pattern. Students will record their rap and evaluate their own performance. Once students have finished their rap their recording will be presented to the entire class.


Students will log onto the Internet and download and install audacity from (5 minutes)

Download poem from (1/2 minute)

Students should practice reciting the poem and start to develop a rhythm to their poem. (3 minutes)

Students will use the Yamaha PSR keyboard to choose a drum pattern (5 minutes)

Students should practice reciting the poem as they select their drum pattern

Tempo of the preloaded drum patterns may be adjusted by the students. (10 minutes)

Using a microphone students should record into Audacity their drum pattern and practice reciting using audacity. Next step using a new track in audacity record the poem. (1 minute)

Listen and evaluate recording, re-record if necessary. (5 minutes)

Submit final version via e-mail to instructor &/or play for class (1/2 minute)


Students will be evaluated on the following items:
1. Finding a rhythm pattern in the poem.
2. Using a keyboard and selecting drum patterns.
3. Verbally rapping to the selected drum pattern.
4. Use of audacity software to record and produce final performance.

Follow Up:

Using Audacity edit recording. Change speeds, Change voice patterns, etc.

Items to Purchase:

Items needed to be purchased if not already available.
1. Electronic Keyboard with drum samples or Drum Machine.
2. Amp if keyboard does not have external speakers.
3. Computer
4. Microphone with attachment to the computer.
