Prior Knowledge and Skills:

Students must be able to differentiate between lines notes and space notes on the staff and know how to draw quarter notes on specified lines and spaces when given a model.

MENC Standards Addressed:

MENC 5: Reading and notating music.

Chalk board, five-line staff drawer, work sheet, pencils.

This lesson can be geared to 3rd-5th grade general music. Students must draw three matching quarter notes in each of ten measures in which a model note is given. Arrows are provided as a guide to assist the student with proper note spacing throughout each measure.

The teacher demonstrates how to identify line notes and space notes and how to place note heads on a line or in a space.
(3-5 mins.)

“Write the Notes” worksheet and pencils are distributed.
Teacher assists students individually as needed. (10-15 mins.)

Students, particularly 3rd graders, often struggle discriminating on sight between line notes and space notes. The concept of line and space notes is reinforced as students are asked to copy given examples of each. A work sheet of this type is helpful in assisting students with this much needed music reading skill. This lesson and worksheet was designed as a tool to aid music reading and notating.

Follow Up:

A work sheet of this kind can be adapted to appropriate age groups. For older students, the worksheet can be designed to require students to fill out incomplete measures with additional note/rest values appropriate to a given time signature.
