Prior Knowledge and Skills:

Basic knowledge of the keyboard

MENC Standards Addressed:

MENC 2: Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
MENC 4: Composing and Arranging Music within specified guidelines.
MENC 9: Understanding Music in Relation to History and Culture

Materials:

Sequence or Recorded 12 Bar Blues Key of D

Objectives:

Students will be able to successfully play back 90% of the melodic statements played. Strengthening their ear-to-hand skills

Procedures:

1. Instructor will introduce the concept of Call & Response and explain its cultural background in regards to Jazz

2. Using only D have the students play back what you play. Play about 5 phrases.

3. Using D and C have the students play back what they hear you play. Play about 5 phrases

4. Allow individual students to do the initial call only using the notes D and / or C while the rest of the class plays the statement back.

Evaluation:

Students will be able to successfully play back 90% of the statements performed

Follow Up:

Maintaining the above procedure, continue to increase the number of pitches used.
