MENC 3: Improvising melodies, harmonies, and accompaniments.
MENC 4: Composing and Arranging Music within specified guidelines.
MENC 5: Reading and notating music.
MENC 6: Listening to, analyzing and describing music.
MENC 7: Evaluating music and music performances.
MENC 8: Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.
MENC 9: Understanding Music in Relation to History and Culture

Materials:

Garage Band and recording hardware

Objectives:

-Students will be able to use garage band to pick a style or groove
-Students will be able to record themselves performing
-Students will be able to improvise using anywhere from 3 to unlimited amount of notes(depending on level of player)

Procedures:

-Students open garage band
-Students select a style or groove using a drum kit and other instruments and insert it into garage band
-Students are given the specific notes to use(elementary)
-Students practice improvising with their style before recording
-By the end of class students must record at least 4 measures of improvising with their style they have created.

Evaluation:

 

Follow Up:

The improvising can be uploaded to the web and be an assignment in coming classes. Students can then go to the web to critique other improvising examples done by other students.
