expo1The New Jersey TI:ME Chapter hosted its second Student Music Technology Expo on Friday, May 18 at Montclair State University. 180 students in grades 4-12 representing 8 different schools rocked the house with exhibits & performances of their original music.

Dr. V.J. Manzo wowed the students with his EAMIR apps, then got them up and playing along. Lab session time included free exploration in GarageBand, Logic and ProTools. In the lounge, students played with the Soundbeam and Wii Music. Nine students participated in the on-site audio engineering competition. The lunch-time jam session allowed students time to improvise and explore using handheld synthesizers.

The pre-awards concert featured students from Luther Lee Emerson School performing their original composition for a combination of acoustic and synthesized instruments, and Monsignor Donovan High School's "Generations" for synthesizer and piano. Gold, silver and bronze festival-style ratings were awarded to 32 student projects, which were adjudicated in advance of the festival by professional composers and performers.

Event origin: The first-ever Student Music Tech Expo was held on March 15, 2011. The idea for the Expo emerged from a brainstorming session held during the NJ TI:ME Chapter teachers' in-service held on October 12, 2009. The goal was to provide a venue to showcase students' creativity and accomplishments, starting with the premise of a "music tech science fair."

"My membership in TI:ME has changed my life. I was originally trying to integrate technology in my music classroom with little knowledge other than information that I had researched. When I discovered TI:ME, I FINALLY had access to resources that I could immediately use. I was able to network with other professionals and get advice. My TI:ME membership has enabled me to learn more - and teach my students using music technology. If you haven't signed up for TI:ME - it's about time!."
