Computer station with Notation Software and MIDI input.

20 Minutes

Prior Knowledge and Skills:

The students will need basic knowledge of music theory and of the piano keyboard.

MENC Standards Addressed:

MENC 2: Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
MENC 3: Improvising melodies, harmonies, and accompaniments.
MENC 5: Reading and notating music.

The lesson can be demonstrated on the same station that the students use to do the activity.

The objective of this lesson is to demonstrate how a MIDI controller can send “musical information” directly into a Notation program, which can then be viewed on the screen and played back or printed.

Explain how the MIDI controller can send MIDI information to the computer software. Then, use the Record function of your Notation software to play in a melody line. Have each student explain what sort of a piece they like to see up on the screen, and what they will play on the keyboard. Allow each student to play 8 measures into their own file. Then, demonstrate playback, and also show how each can be printed out “just like sheet music”.

Since this is such an introductory lesson, there won’t necessarily be any quantitative items to score. However, be sure that each student recognizes the capabilities of this, and encourage them to have fun and get involved with their “recording session.”

Follow Up:

This introduction can lead to many exercises in basic music theory, as well as in composition and sight-reading.

Items to Purchase:

Computer station and MIDI controller Keyboard will be necessary.

When budget should be submitted:

Leave plenty of time in budgeting these items, especially if youâre looking for something more expensive.
