Prior Knowledge and Skills:

Basic understanding of notation, rhythm, meter and scale structures.
Basic ability to manipulate Sibelius in step entry.

MENC Standards Addressed:

MENC 1: Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
MENC 5: Reading and notating music.
MENC 6: Listening to, analyzing and describing music.

Materials:

Interval exercises developed by teacher.

Objectives:

Part one:
Students will be able to write any interval, play any interval, sing any interval on the keyboard and analyze intervals in a musical score.

Procedures:

Students step-enter exercises as they are notated on the exercise paper and have Sibelius play for them so that they can identify them aurally.

Part two:
Students play all types of intervals above and below each key on the keyboard, singing the interval before and after it is played. For this first reinforcement lesson, strudents should aim for completing only the perfect intervals. Subsequent lessons should cover all types of intervals in both directions.

Evaluation:

Student will print out completed paper for evaluation of accuracy.

Follow Up:

Subsequent lessons should cover all types of intervals in both directions.
