Basic clarinet skills, basic music theory(whole, half, quarter).

Materials:

Teacher generated handout.

Objectives:

Students will be able to:

Explain the concept of chord structure and triad.
Explain and perform the G major scale.
Explain and perform the G major triad.

Procedures:

Students will review notes already learned (C,D,E,F,G,A,B) using a variety of rhythms; warm-up.(5 min)
Students will be introduced to chord structure.(5 min)
Students will be introduced to G major triad.
Students will be given teacher created handout titled “Introduction to G Major Triad.”
Students will be shown the difference between notes organized in steps and notes organized with skips.(5-10 min)
Students will be “shown” triads on the piano, thereby representing the concept both visually and aurally.(5 min)
Students will perform the G major triad.
Students will be assigned a note (1,3,5) and form a “human” triad on steps and on the floor. Notes and voices will be given randomly and students will have to determine their correct position in relation to the others; i.e. ”voice themselves.”(5 min)
Students will be given handout revolving around G Major scale/triad and 16-measure melody (Melody #1) and discuss and perform some the exercises.(5 min)
Students will be shown how to analyze melody using Chotd/Scale analysis.(5 min)

Evaluation:

Students will use the given handout for homework/practice. Analysis and performance of exercises and melody will help determine student competency.

Follow Up:

Additional keys, chord types(minor, diminished, augmented).
