Prior Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge of all the major scales and how to build them, and have an intermediate knowledge of an instrument
Knowledge of solfege

MENC Standards Addressed:

MENC 1: Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
MENC 2: Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
MENC 5: Reading and notating music.
MENC 6: Listening to, analyzing and describing music.

Materials:

Keyboard or Piano, Computer, Student instrument, music stands

Objectives:

Students will be able to perform (on an instrument) and / or sing the interval of a perfect fourth up melodically.

Procedures:

Play the interval Perfect fourth on the piano

Sing the interval to the class, then have the class echo

Divide up the class in two parts. Play the D (on the piano) and have half the class sing it(holding the pitch) then have the other half sing the higher note

Play examples of the perfect fourth ascending

A: Elsa’s Procession (Here comes the bride)

B: Mexican Hat Dance

C:Grenadier’s March

D: We Three Kings (this uses P4th down and up, a preview of a future lesson)

E: Star Wars

Divide up the class into pairs: Have one student give a pitch and the other student sing or play the P4th above.

Evaluation:

Having the student play a pitch and the other student sing or play the P4th above gives us immediate feedback on the student progress.

Follow Up:

Divide the class into teams. Play a music selections have the students say where the first interval is a Perfect Fourth or not.
