Introduction

Invitacion is a very colorful Spanish/Portuguese flair by Brazilian composer Ignatio Cervantes.  Through the course of it’s being rehearsed, the following could be covered.

Objectives:

  • Students will identify what give this work it’s Spanish/Portuguese flavor.
  • Students will arrange measures 1-16 & 30-32, using their own choice of instrumentation and either enhancing or altering the ethnic flavor.
  • Publically perform this work.

Procedures:

  • Listen to original score (piano, live or recorded)
  • Rehearse the work.
  • Discuss the ethnic flavor – how does the composer achieve this? (Rhythmic, melodic, harmonic devices, texture, voicing, etc….).
  • Discuss what instrumentation an arranger might use in a subsequent arrangement of this work to enhance or modify that flavor (has previously been arranged for two guitars, two bassoons).
  • Listen to any available recordings of arrangements.
  • Assist students in making their arrangements.
  • Perform work (str. qtt or solo winds & qtt)

Extra Credit:

  • Have students get copyright clearance.  Then arrange the entire piece and publish to the web (i.e. Sibelius/Scorch).
  • Perform any student arrangements of the complete work.
