Basic Music Notation Review Contest for Choir

Prior Knowledge and Skills:

The students have individually worked on all six units of EMT. They have not done the reviews after each chapter. They have also reviewed the material in class.

MENC Standards Addressed:

MENC 5: Reading and notating music.

Materials:

3 Computer set-ups in the classroom (Mac or windows) Essentials of Music Theory – Alfred Publishing

Objectives:

1. The students will be split into groups of three. 2. Three groups of three will come up to the three computer set-ups. The teacher will give a “ready, set,go!” and they will go to EMT’s Unit 1 review. Working within their groups, they will finish the review as fast as they can. A student will time the teams with a stop watch. The first team who finishes receives 10 points. They lose a point for every wrong answer. The second place team will receive 5 points. The losers receive 0. A student will keep score on the board. 3. Repeat the above process with the remaining 5 unit reviews. This process should not be done in one day unless the class is small.

Procedures:

1. Set up the three computer set-ups with Essentials of Music Theory in the classroom. 2. Monitor each student’s individual progress on the six units of EMT before the review contest 3. Put the class into teams or have them choose their own. 4. Buy some sort of reward for the winning team

Evaluation:

1. Number of questions in the reviews answered correctly. 2. The interaction of the team members while answering questions. 3. Whether each student completed the 6 units before the review contest.

Follow Up:

Increase the difficulty of material and invent a new game for review.
