Prior Knowledge and Skills:
Students are in Kindergarten of grade one.
1. Students can visually identify the first 7
letters of the alphabet.
2. Students can write letters with a pencil.
MENC Standards Addressed:
MENC 5: Reading and notating music.
Materials:
1. Whiteboard or some other method of showing written notes to the whole class.
2. A worksheet prepared with a notation program. At the top have the 5 line notes with their names (e,g,b,d,f).
Below this, draw various line and space notes. Have the students circle the line notes. Next, Have 5-7 line notes drawn on a staff, and have the students fill in the note names in the space below. Next, have the note names below a blank staff, and have the students draw the notes.
Objectives:
1. The students will be able to draw the appropriate line note on a staff, when given the note name.
2. The students will be able to name the appropriate line note when seeing it on a staff.
Procedures:
1. Students seated in a way that they can write on the worksheet.
2. Pencils are passed out to the students.
3. Draw a staff on the board, or use your computer (with a notation program) projected on a screen.
4. Review line note names with the students.
5. Pass out a worksheet that you prepared. The students will use the visual line notes and names, to do the rest of the worksheet.
6. Float around the room, and help as needed.
7. Finally, ‘correct’ the worksheet together by doing it on the board with the whole class.
Evaluation:
4 point rubric.
4- Student know all note names and can draw all notes.
3- Students know most of the note names and can draw most of the notes.
2- Student knows some of the note names and can draw some of the notes.
2-Student knows few of the note names and can draw few notes.

1. Same activity with space notes.
2. same activity with space and line notes.
