High School

Class:

Music Theory

Equipment:

Computer, Finale

Duration:

5 Minutes

Prior Knowledge and Skills:

An understanding of how to notate pitch using Simple Note Entry in Finale.

MENC Standards Addressed:

MENC 5: Reading and notating music.
MENC 6: Listening to, analyzing and describing music.

Materials:

Just the attached Finale document.

Objectives:

This lesson is designed to support the aural activities of a beginning music theory class. Students who are struggling with melodic dictation can use this and similar exercises to support the work done in class. The assessment is built into the document and explained in the instructions.

Procedures:

This lesson is designed for independent practice and would be completed by an individual student outside of the formal classroom setting as practice for melodic dictation administered during regular classtime. This document/lesson could also be used by students who are absent during a dictation quiz and need to make up the work.

Evaluation:

The assessment is built into the document and explained in the instructions.

Follow Up:

I would consider this document to be a template which can easily be adapted for multiple lessons simply by replacing the given notes with an alternate example.

Items to Purchase:

A computer and one copy of Finale.
