Materials:

Power point slide of song “Mother’s Advice”
Computer with Band in a Box
Recorders
Pre-recorded samples of rhythmic accompaniments
Multi-media projector

Objectives:

Students will learn to play the song “Mother’s Advice” on the recorder. Students will distinguish the differences between styles of rhythmic accompaniments.

Procedures:

1. Show power point slide of the song Mother’s Advice.
2. Chorally read and clap song rhythm.
3. Chorally read letter names of song notes.
4. Slowly play through song as a class.
5. Allow 3 minutes for individual song practice.
6. Play pre-recorded Band-in-the-box arrangements of Mother’s Advice.
7. Compare the styles of the arrangements. How did the instruments change? How is the rhythm different? How does each one feel?
8. Play along with each style.
9. Discuss which styles were easier to play and why.

Evaluation:

Students will perform “Mother’s Advice” with 80% accuracy. Students will list characteristics and differences of each style.

Follow Up:

Let students choose different rhythmic styles to play with the song. Students choose one of the styles and perform “Mother’s Advice” alone or with a small group.
