Art: Only their imagination and drawing skills.
Band: A prepared piece of music.

MENC Standards Addressed:

MENC 6: Listening to, analyzing and describing music.
MENC 8: Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.
MENC 9: Understanding Music in Relation to History and Culture

Materials:

Digital camera, projector and screen

Objectives:

To have a music group perform while pictures are projected. The pictures are projected onto a screen that tells a story along with the music.
Procedures:

Procedures:

1. Team up with an art teacher.
2. Pick a piece for your band, string ensemble, etc. that you feel would work well with a pictorial representation (Ex. Mars from The Planets).
3. Have a recording of the piece you will perform. It is best to have one that is exact to the arrangement you are planning. If one is not available try to make one yourself.
4. With the art teacher go through the score and decide where you want to have a new slide displayed. (Ex. Every 4 measures).
5. Play the piece for the art students. Have them discuss what type of imagery comes to mind. Start to formulate a story that can be told through pictures.
6. Once the pictures are completed, take digital snapshots (with a digital camera or use a scanner).
7. Each picture will be inserted on a slide in Power point.
8. Some one will have to manually change slides while the ensemble performs. A second score with markings will be needed.

Evaluation:

The band students will perform in a concert setting. Art students will observe how their art corresponds to the music.

Follow Up:

Students can self evaluate what worked well and what could be improved.
