-students already experienced improvising short question and answer tunes with partners

MENC Standards Addressed:

MENC 4: Composing and Arranging Music within specified guidelines.
MENC 5: Reading and notating music.

Materials:

computers
worksheet with a sory on it. Some words are spelled in treble clef notes (coded)

Objectives:

Students will review note names and placement on staff
Students will compose simple question and answer using doodle pad in Music Ace program

Procedures:

1. Students will sing the name song
2. Students will echo/read a few rhythms on du de du and echo a few intervals after the teacher.
3. Students will come up, each in turn, to the LCD connected computer to complete lessons 7, 8 (treble staff) of Music Ace 1 software program
4. Students will be divided into two teams to compete in the game portion of the lessons
5. Students will work on individual computer stations in the lab on their two phrase question and answer composition.
6. Students will fill out a review sheet that tells a story with decoding the words spelled with notes in treble cleff

Evaluation:

Teacher does informal evaluations as students answer questions in the lesson
Teacher will check the worksheet.
Teacher will check the composition and evaluate it for understanding of question and answer.

Follow Up:

1 The composition can be done with one phrase composed with only high pitches, and the answer with only low pitches and vise versa. That segues nicely into the 1st lesson on Music Ace software–high/low pitch, also 3rd lesson.
2 The doodle pad has a nice feature of round notes=longer and skinny notes=shorter. That can lead into note values lesson.
