BASIC MUSICAL NOTATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS

Materials:

COMPUTER
NOTATION SOFTWARE
PAPER
PENCIL

Objectives:

The students will compose and notate rhythm patterns using notation software on the computer.
The students will be given guidelines to follow to ensure success.
The students will be graded on their creativity and variety of patterns and instruments used.
The students will print out and hand in their final copy to be assessed.

Procedures:

1 Students will review notation of simple rhythmic patterns using the quarter note, eighth note, sixteenth note and the quarter rest.
2 Students will compose rhythm patterns 8 measures in length for 4 different percussion instruments. (Hand written)
3 Once students are satisfied with their work, they will notate their composition on the computer using the notation software.
4 The final copy will be printed and assessed.

Evaluation:

Students will have to show a complete 8 measures for the 4 instruments.
Rhythm patterns should equal 4 beats per measure.
Creativity among the patterns and the combonation of instruments will also be evaluated.

Follow Up:

Corrections will be discussed and notated.
Students will invite their classmates to perform their compositions by using the instruments they have chosen or clapping out the rhythms.
