Beginning music symbol recognition. (Music notes)

MENC Standards Addressed:

MENC 5: Reading and notating music.
MENC 7: Evaluating music and music performances.

Materials:

Note recogition worksheet. Finale or Finale notepad.
(see attached worksheet)

Objectives:

Students will be able to recognize whole, half , quarter , eighth and sixteenth notes on the treble clef.
The students will write the names of the notes directly below the notes recognized on the provided worksheets.
Basic grading of the worksheets will take place for assessment.

Procedures:

The teacher will introduce the whole, half , quarter , eighth, and sixteenth notes by drawing them onto the classroom music blackboard. The children will draw each note introduced three times onto a piece of music manusript paper provided by the teacher.
If a chalkboard is not available, flashcards can be used to subsitute.

Evaluation:

Based on students grades on the worksheet.

Follow Up:

The teacher and students will play the Music Symbols Ball Throwing Game. Children will be asked by the teacher to hit a certain music note chosen by the teacher. Children that are successful we receive an extra turn.

Items to Purchase:

Paper, pencils, Finale 2005 or finale notepad. Chalkboard or music flashcards.

When budget should be submitted:

Basic classroom materials are only needind to perform this lesson.
Note: I stronly suggest buying a Music Symbols Recognition Ballgame for the follow up to this lesson. It is very inexpensive ($14.95) and children of all ages love to play and learn with this game.
