20 keyboard instruments (Yamaha models PSR-292, PSR-282,PSR-220, and others.
Headphones for each student.
Headphone and 1/4″ splitter for instructor.

Duration:

60+ time for evaluation Minutes

Prior Knowledge and Skills:

-Students have received instruction on how to select voices on the electric keyboard.
-Students have played ascending and decending chromatic scales on keyboard.
-Students have played melodies in C major and G major on the keyboard.
-Students have played ‘Ode to Joy’ theme on Appalacian Dulcimer.
-Students have watched and listened to video of Berlin Philharmonic performance of selection with ‘Ode to Joy’ theme from 4th mvt. of Symphony #9

Materials:

Giant keyboard poster.
Sheet music of ‘Ode to Joy’ melody.
White board with musical staff.

Objectives:

The student will be able to play on the electric keyboard the melodic theme from Beethoven’s Symphony #9 (hereafter called ‘Ode to Joy’)in the original key (D major)

The student will be able to play Ode to Joy on the electric keyboard with correct rhythm.

The student will be able to play Ode to Joy on the electric keyboard with correct fingering.

Procedures:

The position of the keys will be reviewed using the Giant Keyboard poster.

Students will be introduced to the D major finger postition for the left and right hand.

Students will observe a demonstration of shifing from the D major position to reach the low ‘A’ in the melody.

Students will practice an exercise shifting from D position to the low A.

Students will rehearse sections of piece together reading from White Board.

Students will rehearse independently using headphones and sheet music.

Instructor will evaluate individual students by listening via headphones and splitter.

Student may select any melodic voice to play piece.

Evaluation:

A = Student successfully plays piece with correct rhythm and fingering using both hands in parallel motion.

A- = Student successfully plays piece with correct rhythm and fingering using both hands one at a time.

B+ = Student successfully plays piece with correct rhythm and fingering using both one hand.

B = Student plays the piece with one hand, but has some difficulties with fingering or rhythm.

B- = Student plays the piece with one hand, but has some difficulties with fingering and rhythm. OR Student makes a strong effort to play the piece but is unable to do so successfully.

C = Student plays the piece with moderate effort and preparation.

D = Student plays the piece with minimal effort and preparation.

F = Student does not play the piece.

Follow Up:

Follow-up lessons can include playing piece into a MIDI sequencer, selecting appropriate voicing, and adding additional parts.

Students can choose to play the same piece on other instruments. (Classroom instruments: Guitar, xylophone or Band/Orchestra instruments)

Students may select a choice song in the key of D major to play on the electric keyboard.

At the end of the term, students will select a classroom instrument (Dulcimer, Keyboard, Guitar, Xylophone) and play as an ensemble in a performance for the 7th Grade Drama class. (The Drama students will, in turn, perform a selection from a play for the Music students.)
