Prior Knowledge and Skills:

Students are able to play the notes G, A , B & C on the recorder.
Students recognize and are able to perform quarter notes, half notes, and quarter rests.
Students can play the song “Merrily We Roll Along” on the recorder

Power point slides with musical notation of “Merrily We Roll Along” and “Mother’s Advice”


Students will correctly perform songs in 3/4 and 4/4 meter
Students will aurally distinguish 3/4 meter from 4/4 meter.


1. Using “Power Point”, project notation for “Merrily We Roll Along.”
2. Chorally read and clap rhythm using Kodaly syllables.
3. Chorally read note letter names.
4. Students play song on recorder.
5. Explain and discuss 4/4 meter.
6. Divide class into groups of 4. Group creates 2 movements – 1 strong and 1 weak
7. Students practice performing 4/4 pattern of 1 strong and 3 weak beats.
8. Play keyboard rhythm in 4/4 meter while students perform movement patterns.
9. Show power point notation of “Mother’s Advice”. Notice the 3/4 time signature.
10. Explain and discuss 3/4 meter.
11. Groups practice using 2 movements in 3/4 patterns of 1 strong and 2 weak beats.
12. Play a waltz rhythm on the keyboard as students perform 3/4 movement pattern.
13. Play various keyboard rhythms in 3/4 and 4/4 meter while students move with the correct beat pattern.
14. Play “Mother’s Advice” on keyboard as students perform 3/4 pattern.
15. Chorally clap the rhythm to “Mother’s Advice” using Kodaly syllables.
17. Chorally read the note letter names.
18. Play the song on the recorder.


Students will correctly perform movement patterns with rhythms in 3/4 and 4/4 meter.
Students will perform “Merrily We Roll along” and “Mother’s Advice” on the recorder with 90% accuracy.

Follow Up:

Individually test students’ ability to correctly play both songs.
Written test for aurally identifying 3/4 and 4/4 meter.
Sing both songs using solfege or words while emphasizing the strong and weak beats
