Prior Knowledge and Skills:

Students should know how to compose and perform rhythms in 4/4 meter with quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, and quarter rests.

Materials:

Rhythm Piece Worksheet with instructions
Prepared Print Music file with 2,eight measure single line
staves in 4/4 time

Objectives:

Students will be able to:
– Create with a partner an eight measure two-part rhythm in
Print Music.
– Print out their rhythm, and notate the counting under the notes.
– Select two rhythm instruments, practice and perform this
Rhythm Duet with their partner.

Procedures:

1.Teacher will distribute the Rhythm Piece worksheet to the students, this includes the directions for this activity.
2.The students will work with a partner to compose an eight measure two-part rhythm in Print Music.

3.The students will open the prepared file titled Rhythm Piece in the Print Music program.

4.The students will compose their 4/4 rhythm using quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, and quarter rests.

5.They may compose their rhythm directly on the computer or do a working copy on worksheet first.

6.The students will then listen to their rhythm on the computer, and can make changes to improve their rhythms is necessary.
7.Students should insert their names as the composers and name and save the file in their folders.
8.The students then may print out their composition and mark the counting underneath the notes on the printed copy.
9.The students should select two rhythm instruments and practice and perform their Rhythm Duet for the class.

Evaluation:

Rhythm Duet Rubric:
4 – Rhythm has no note, meter or counting errors, and utilizes all notes listed. The composed rhythm duet is performed with no counting errors.
3 – Rhythm has 1-2 note, meter or counting errors, and utilizes all notes listed. The composed rhythm duet is performed with 1-2 counting errors.

2 – Rhythm has 3-4 note, meter or counting errors, and utilizes most notes listed. The composed rhythm duet is performed with 3-4 counting errors.

1 – Rhythm has 5 or more note, meter or counting errors, and utilizes some notes listed. The composed rhythm duet is performed with 5 or more counting errors.

Follow Up:

Compose and perform a 12- 16 measure rhythm composition
Compose and perform a rhythm composition with 3 or 4 parts.
