Prior Knowledge and Skills:

Students can read and perform quarter notes and rests and eighth notes (beamed). They have also notated patterns on the board and on worksheets.

Materials:

See equipment above, plus optional pitched or non-pitched percussion

Objectives:

Students will be able to use notation software to compose rhythm patterns for the class to perform, using quarter notes and rests, and beamed eighth notes. Students will then be able to perform notated patterns correctly.

Procedures:

Class begins with echo clap activity. Teacher claps 4 beat patterns for class to echouse quarter and eighth notes first, then add some quarter rests.

Teacher will then notate some 4 beat patterns to review reading those note and rest values. Class reads the patterns using rhythm syllables, and then performs them (clapping).

Using the projector, teacher will open a file showing 2 empty measures on a one-lined staff (previously prepared for non-pitched percussion, using notation software)

Teacher will demonstrate note entry, using quarter notes and rests and beamed eighth notes. Review the need for 4 beats in each measure (indicated by the 4/4 time signature).

Students will take turns entering one beat of rhythm. When all 8 beats in the composition are completed, class will read the new composition using rhythm syllables, and then clap it.

Repeat until all students have had a turn entering notation.

Extension activities: Have students perform the compositions on non-pitched percussion instruments. Possibly have students improvise a melody on Orff mallet instruments (set up in a pentatonic scale) using the rhythm patterns they notated. Small groups or soloists can perform while the other students listen and evaluate.

Evaluation:

Does each measure have 4 beats of rhythm? Are the rhythms read and performed correctly? Teacher evaluates students, and guides students in evaluating themselves.

Follow Up:

Have class visit the computer lab (which has notation software installed) where each student can notate and then print out their own rhythm composition to share with the class. They can then take their composition home to share and perform for their families.
