MENC 6: Listening to, analyzing and describing music.

Materials:

Listen and Learn by George Ober and Joseph Pergola
Midi files of We will Rock You, selections from Carmina
Burana, or other selections with a strong beat.

Objectives:

Students will successfully perform 16 basic rhythm patterns using (2 measures, 8 beats) quarter, eighth, and 16th notes, and play along with various styles of music

Procedures:

1. Explain and demonstrate quarter, eighth, and 16th note rhythms using overhead or on hand-outs – 5 minutes

2. Use call and response to demonstrate each rhythm used; students clap, then use one finger on snare drum to begin
playing rhythms 1-16. 5 – 10 minutes

3. Using chosen midi files, and with the keyboards set for percussion, class plays the rhythms in a steady beat (2 measures each) along with music. Students should begin by using the same sounds. When they have and understanding of the rhythms, they can improvise with other percussion instruments. 10 – 15 minutes

Evaluation:

Teacher listens to students perform rhythm of their choice correctly; or troubleshoots problems individually

Follow Up:

This lesson could be done with varied music examples such as, Canon in D, Take Five,Ode to Joy, etc. Students can also use alternating hands for each rhythm. It can then be extended to melodic improvisation.
