Materials:

Standard MIDI files of classical compositions. The instructor will need to re-assign all voices and MIDI channels to piano, channel 1.

Objectives:

Students will orchestrate a standard MIDI file of a familiar classical work using instruments other than those for which the piece was originally written. Students should also add tempo and dynamic changes in their score.

Procedures:

1. Review basic skills in using music notation software to import a file and change the instrument/midi channel assignment.
2. Have students load their file and assign different instruments/midi channels to their score. Remind them to use instruments that will match the range of the “traditional” instruments they are replacing.
3. Have the students play an excerpt of their score for the class.

Evaluation:

Use a rubric based on: Instruments substituted for the original score kept the music “intact” while providing a new tone color. Students successfully used tempo changes. Students successfully used program changes. Students successfully used varying dynamic levels.

Follow Up:

Have students bring in sheet music to a current favorite song to orchestrate using substitute tone colors and tempo/dynamic changes.
