Prior Knowledge and Skills:

knowledge of white keys on the keyboard, knowledge of solfege syllables.

MENC Standards Addressed:

MENC 1: Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
MENC 2: Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
MENC 3: Improvising melodies, harmonies, and accompaniments.
MENC 4: Composing and Arranging Music within specified guidelines.

Materials:

Keyboards, Group Education Controller

Objectives:

-Students will sing (solfege) 3 Blind Mice in tune and in tempo
-Students will play accurately by ear “3 Blind Mice” in the key of C.
-Students will choose timbres from a general midi keyboard to produce the song.
-Students will be able to play their part in a class setting as a round.

Procedures:

-The class will sing (on solfege) “3 blind mice” – first echoing line by line, then altogether, then as a round (10′)
-The class will rehearse and perform “3 blind mice” together on basic sound A001 on triton keyboard. (10′)
-Students will practice on their own using various sounds from the Triton, choosing their “favorite” sound. Teacher will monitor students practicing through GEC (10′)
-Class will perform as a round, one time through each person one at a time with their chosen sound. (10′)

Evaluation:

At the conclusion of this class, will have performed 3 Blind Mice with accurate pitch and rhythm, both alone and in the context of a class round. Students will be awarded 4 points for completing the following objectives.

  • 1 point for singing with accurate pitch and rhythm
  • 1 point for playing with accurate pitch and rhythm
  • 1 point for successfully choosing a general MIDI (anything other than piano).
  • 1 point for performing their part in time within the structure of the round.

Any student who does not successfully achieve 4 points will be assisted by teacher or peers until they can achieve 4 points.

Follow Up:

-Song can be transposed into other keys
-Song can be recorded with accompaniment tracks created
-Song can be notated using Finale or Sibelius
-Other known folk songs can be used to perform similar activities.
