Prior Knowledge and Skills:

Beginner band students with no prior knowledge with reading music notation. They are able to play some note on there instruments.

MENC Standards Addressed:

MENC 5: Reading and notating music.

Materials:

Sibelius – worksheet Band in the box.

Objectives:

To understand and learn what is a whole note, half note, quarter note and eigth note. To read by clapping out basic notation rhythm patterns

Procedures:

1-Intro- reading a book, poem and explain that the words helps us to understand what the writer wrote- In almost the same way the notation of music helps us to understand how a song is to be played on your instruments. (2 min.) 2-Show large flash cards of the whole note, half note , quater note and eigth note. Separately explain the note duration and demonstrate the sound duration or value of each notation symbo using Band in the Box. (12 min.) 3- Demostrate Length of each notaton by clapping out the lenth of each notation. Have students repeat clapping of each notation modelled by the teacher. (8 min.) 4-Display several basic rhythm patterns and have individual students clap out the rhythm . Have the total class together clap out the patterns. Have students read the rhythm patterns using their instruments.(10 min)

Evaluation:

5-Complete a basic notation worksheet (5min.)

Follow Up:

Adding notation to the staff.
