At the conclusion of this lesson, High School / General Music Students will have an extended knowledge of the Musical production of “West Side Story” through use of the internet.


After viewing “West Side Story”, hand out West Side Story History of American Popular Music Internet Scavenger Hunt Handout. Place students in groups of 2 and tell them to use internet search engines to browse the internet in order to answer the questions in the worksheet. Students will search the Web for information on “West Side Story”, Leonard Bernstein, Natalie Wood and Stephen Sondheim. Students should complete the handout in 30 minutes and then participate in a classroom discussion and overview.


Completed handouts will be graded on the accuracy of the information. Classroom participation will be included in the assessment.
