Prior Knowledge and Skills:
One lesson on melodic dictation.
Proficiency with Finale or Finale Notepad music notation software (be able to operate the playback controls, and enter notes and rhythms).
MENC Standards Addressed:
MENC 5: Reading and notating music.
MENC 6: Listening to, analyzing and describing music.

Teacher-generated notation file set up as a four measure staff with clef, key signature, and time signature indicated.
Objectives:
Students will be able to notate a four-measure melody.
Procedures:
1. The student receives the melodic dictation Finale file (and the answer file) from the teacher.
2. The student plays the file three separate times using the playback controls and notates the melody on the blank staff. (The file plays a tonic chord to establish the key, gives a four-click count-off, and then plays the melody.)
Evaluation:
The student opens the answer file and checks his/her answer.

Other Finale files with more complex melodies.
