Basic computer skills, a good basic knowledge of their instrument,good note reading skills

MENC 6: Listening to, analyzing and describing music.
MENC 7: Evaluating music and music performances.

Materials:

Music Ace 2, computer work stations or computer lab

Objectives:

Students will show an understanding of flats and sharps and the relationship between whole and half steps. They will be able to recognize sharps and flats by the symbol and by listening.

Procedures:

Open Music Ace 2 Session 4.
Begin with section 1 and go through section 5
Use the program to go through whole and half steps, sharp and flat notes, how a sharp and flat affect a note and how to name the notes. This will take about 20 – 25 minutes.

Evaluation:

Go to the game section for Session 4
Use sections 1,3, and 4 to evaluate the students understanding of whole and half steps and sharps and flats.
This may take the remainder of the time about 15 – 20 minutes depending on how fast the students work.

Follow Up:

Use this lesson to expand on accidentals, pitch differences, and tuning.
Assign the students a musical example that includes sharps and flats to practice for their next lesson and evaluate them on how accurately they can play the piece to show their understanding of the concept. Students who finish the above evaluation early can begin to work on the assigned piece.
