Prior Knowledge and Skills:
Students know how to construct the tonic and dominant chords in akk major and minor keys.
MENC Standards Addressed:
MENC 4: Composing and Arranging Music within specified guidelines.
MENC 5: Reading and notating music.
MENC 6: Listening to, analyzing and describing music.
Materials:
Worksheets provided by the teacher, Chalkboard (whiteboard)
Computer, synthesizer with Finale.
Objectives:
Students will learn how to harmonize th V-I Authentic Cadence using four procedures.
Students will be able to write the cadences in all Major & Minor Keys.
Procedures:
Pass out the example sheet for the Authentic Cadence (this was prepared using Finale and Appleworks) Pass out the coresponding worksheet. Explain each procedure using the example and then have the students try examples using the provided worksheets. Depending on the level of the students in the class, followup lessons may be needed. The teacher may want to work on one procedure per class period.
Evaluation:
Quizes and tests prepared by the teacher again using Finale and Appleworks should be utilized. Students can also put examples on the board. Students may also use prepared Finale documents using simple entry to fill in inner voices in the examples. These may be printed out as worksheets for the students.
Follow Up:
Follow-Up lessons would include examples where only the Bassline is given. Students then have to enter the upper three voices. In additiond, examples where only the soprano line is given could be produced using Finale and Appleworks. Word may be used if Appleworks is not available.
