30 Minutes

Prior Knowledge and Skills:

1. The students have been taught the notes on a staff: FACE, EGBDF, Leger lines, Bass/Treble clef, and the concept of the Grand staff.
2. The students have been introduced to the principals of high and low pitch, on a staff and in sound.

MENC Standards Addressed:

MENC 5: Reading and notating music.
MENC 6: Listening to, analyzing and describing music.


1. Access to a computer lab with “Music Ace” installed on the desktop.
2. The “Music Ace” CD


1. To have the students practice what they have learned in the music classrooom using a different medium.
2. The students will be able to indentify: The notes on a staff by pitch, The names of the notes on the treble staff, The relationship between high and low pitches.


1. The students will install the program disc in the CD drive of the computer.
2. Double click the “Music Ace” icon on the desktop to open the program.
3. The students will proceed to “Introduction to the staff”, lesson one.
4. Allow the students to explore the self-guided program, while you monitor their progress.



4. The student moves easily through the program with no assistance.
3. The student moves with some assistance through the program.
2. The student moves with difficulty through the program requiring much assistance.
1. The student does not understand the concepts being taught.

*The program keeps track of the student’s scores.

Follow Up:

1. The students can also study this lesson in groups, i.e. co-operative learning.
2. The students, individually or in groups, would be allowed to play the games that are associated with the lesson, emphasizing these particular concepts.
