Materials:

Computers, headphones, entry level wave form editor such as Sound Studio (Mac OS)

Objectives:

The students will see what a sound-wave of their voice looks like and understand how it can be altered using the various filters of the wave form editor.

Procedures:

The students will work in pairs at the computer, each having their own set of headphones. They will open the wave form editor program and record themselves saying their whole names together joined by the word “and” (John Smith and Mary Jones). Then they will view it and listen to it . Now they will experiment with digital signal processors (dsp) to alter the wave, including the backwards dsp. (15 minutes)
Next they will practice saying their names backwards in the same way in which they said them forwards. Then they will record themselves saying their names backwards. Now they will use the backwards dsp to see if it sounds correct forwards. (They will have fun with this step!) Now they will add two more filters, including reverb and another filter of their choice, playing it back to see how the dsp affected the waveform. (20 minutes)
In a class discussion, the students will tell which dsp they experimented with and tell which ones they liked or disliked (10minutes). Next class they will hear them.

Evaluation:

The students will have saved the file in a new folder after they have finished their work. The files will be checked by the instructor to make sure all work was completed.

Follow Up:

Before the next class, the instructor will gather the files the students have made in class. Then in class, the instructor will play the backwards versions for the students, not telling them which one is being played. The students will then try to figure out whose names they are (and laugh because they sound funny!)
