Prior Knowledge and Skills:

If they already know how to use GarageBand, the lesson will be quick and easy. If not, the GarageBand interface will need to be explained. A working knowledge of how to use GarageBand and iTunes is all that is needed.

MENC 6: Listening to, analyzing and describing music.
MENC 7: Evaluating music and music performances.
MENC 8: Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.
MENC 9: Understanding Music in Relation to History and Culture

Materials:

The students will provide their own music recording examples on CD

Objectives:

The objective for this lesson is to have the students use music vocabulary to describe what makes their favorite band or artist’s recordings sound good to them. In making their presentation, they need to identify the style of music being performed, musical influences that have helped influence that style or performer, and verbally analyze the musical performance (identifying things like form, rhythm, dynamics, tonality, etc.).

Procedures:

1) Play a few professionally produced Podcasts from the iTunes store to demonstrate what a Podcast is and what is capable of being accomplished (10-15 minutes)
2) Overview how to use GarageBand to record a Podcast (15-20 minutes)
3) Demonstrate how to import an audio track into GarageBand and edit the file into short “snippets” (5 minutes)
4) Overview how to import graphics into the Podcast track and how to make chapter markers (5 minutes)
5) Lastly, explain how to export Podcast when finished (5 minutes)

Evaluation:

Each podcast can be demonstrated during class. A rubric can be utilized for student assessment

Follow Up:

Create other multimedia Podcasts on :famous composers, jazz musicians, music eras, etc.

Items to Purchase:

You will need access to Macintosh computers that have GarageBand 3 installed. Podcasting features are not available in previous versions of GarageBand.
